Social Events

Saturday Nov 8  |  Dinner and Chicago Hauntings
For those participants arriving early, a special tour has been arranged for seeing a different side of Chicago. The tour begins with dinner at a pub in the Swedish neighborhood of Andersonville. The neighborhood is known for its diversity, both in the ethnicities of its inhabitants and the unique commercial district, which offers shopping at dozens of independently owned shops and restaurants.

After dinner participants will board a tour bus to explore Chicago, one of the most haunted cities in the world. Many of the sites on the tour are notorious for their ghost sightings and paranormal activity; some are familiar only to Chicagoans. The tour follows a course of history that starts with the very beginnings of Chicago, traveling from its humble origins as a frontier outpost in the early 1800’s into the 20th century and the gangster era of the 1920s and 1930s, and forward to today.

The cost of the tour is $95 US and includes transportation, dinner and the tour. Participants will depart the Chicago Marriott O’Hare at 5:00 PM with a tentative return at midnight.

Sunday Nov 9  |  Millennium Park Tour, Lunch, and Architectural Riverboat Tour
Explore Chicago’s impressive Millennium Park via walking tour, experience casual dining at the Park Grill, and take a 90-minute river cruise that will allow you to examine Chicago’s famed architecture from a unique vantage point.

At nearly 25 acres, Chicago’s Millennium Park replaced a worn-down train yard in 2004, and offers visitors a stunning array of world-renowned postmodern art and vast expanses of greenery. The Cloud Gate (affectionately known as “The Bean”), the Crown Fountain, the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, and the McCormick Tribune ice skating rink are a few of the most recognizable features. The Chicago Architecture Foundation (a nonprofit organization formed in 1966) will lead guests on a walking tour that showcases the highlights of the park.

After the tour, dine at the Park Grill, where you can experience contemporary American cuisine and remarkable views. After lunch, meet up with the Chicago Architecture Foundation again to relax on a guided Chicago River tour. Narration provided by expert docents will highlight the stunning Chicago architecture that paved the way for the rest of the world’s skyscrapers. Guests have the choice of open-air or interior seating.

The cost of the tour is $95 US and includes transportation, lunch and the tours. Participants will depart the Chicago Marriott O’Hare at 9:15 AM with a tentative return at 4:15 PM.

Monday Nov 10  |  “People and Places” Coach Tour and Lunch
Explore the city in a unique way by visiting Chicago's Icons - the places, the neighborhoods, and the people that have made Chicago what it is today. The 5-hour tour also includes an appetizer, lunch, and a dessert at different stops along the way.

Experience many of the locations that put Chicago on the map! Visit the 3rd-largest Chinatown in the US as you cross under the Chinatown gate (built in 1975), in the near South Side. See the many restaurants, grocery stores, and medicine shops that make the community a hub for Chinese residents in the Midwest. Check out Greektown and Little Italy in the Near West Side. Both are famed for their dining and cultural impact on Chicago. Jane Addams’ Hull House settlement is also on the tour. Old Town (an affluent and historic neighborhood) and the Gold Coast (the second-wealthiest neighborhood in the US, and listed in the National Register of Historic Places) are next, and visitors will see the site of the St. Valentine’s Day massacre in Lincoln Park. For some more recent cultural flavor, the tour takes visitors past Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo studios and the Michael Jordan statue. Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs, is next, along with the Moody Bible Institute and of course the Loop.

The cost of the tour is $75 US and includes transportation, lunch and the tour. The tour will depart the Chicago Marriott O’Hare at 9:00 AM with a tentative return at 4:00 PM.

Monday Nov 10  |  Evening Social Events (two options)
Conference attendees and their guests are offered two choices as a way to experience Chicago on Monday night: a tour of Chicago’s diverse dining or a feast for the eyes and ears at the Civic Opera House.

Chicago Lyric Opera
The world-renowned Lyric Opera of Chicago performs in the Chicago Civic Opera House, a 1929 building with an art deco interior. It is the second-largest opera auditorium in North America but boasts excellent seating and acoustics. Participants will experience Paul Curran’s “Lulu” (in German with projected English translations): “Meet Lulu, opera's most dangerous heroine; instantly an object of obsessive sexual desire for every man who meets her—and seriously bad news for any man who gets involved. A string of damaged lovers, three dead husbands, the law in hot pursuit...from posh Paris salons to the slums of London, everyone wants a piece of Lulu—and she does what she needs to do to stay alive. Is she immoral or amoral? You decide as this steamy, spiky spellbinder grabs you by the throat and never lets go. Embodying the sexy siren as no one else can, Marlis Petersen is Lulu.”

The cost of the tour is $125 US and includes transportation, a box dinner on the coach, and opera tickets. The tour will depart the Chicago Marriott O’Hare at 5:00 PM with a tentative return at 10:00 PM.

Dinearound Chicago
Experience, in one night, the nearly endless variety of cuisine to be found in Chicago. Known worldwide for its class and diversity, Chicago’s food scene will be displayed via Dine-Around, a Progressive Food Tour that escorts guests in style via coach bus to three different restaurants. Participants will enjoy hors d'oeuvres served at the first restaurant, the main course at a second restaurant, and dessert at a third restaurant. Generous portions and flavors for every palate will delight.

The cost of the tour is $95 US and includes transportation and dinner. The tour will depart the Chicago Marriott O’Hare at 5:00 PM with a tentative return at 10:00 PM.

Tuesday Nov 11  |  Art Institute of Chicago and Lunch
The Art Institute of Chicago, founded in 1879 as both a museum and school, first stood on the southwest corner of State and Monroe Streets. It opened on its present site at Michigan Avenue and Adams Street in 1893. Built on rubble from the 1871 Chicago fire, the museum housed a collection of plaster casts and had a visionary purpose: to acquire and exhibit art of all kinds and to conduct programs of education. The collection now encompasses more than 5,000 years of human expression from cultures around the world, and the school's graduate program is continually ranked as one of the best in the country. Within the next decade, a new complex will continue this process of growth. Participate in a one hour guided tour to see the highlights of the Art Institute, with time reserved to explore. Enjoy table service at the Garden Restaurant in the museum with a menu that features seasonal cuisine of varying styles and influences.

The cost of the tour is $65 US and includes transportation, museum tickets, and lunch. The tour will depart the Chicago Marriott O’Hare at 9:00 AM with a tentative return at 4:00 PM.
